Kiwi Can - T3, WK9

Today room 7 had Kiwican with Mr Numia in room 12. We learnt the meaning's of Perseverance and Resilience. For the energizer we played ball tag which was boys vs girls, the team starting with the ball had to try and eliminate their opponents. For the activity we played picitionary, mr Numia split us into 4 groups and they first four going up had to draw out the specific word mr said and the team who guesses it right gets a point. In Kiwican I learnt perseverance means keep trying and resilience means bouncing back and coping with challenges.

Kiwi sport - Gymnastics

Kiwi Sports
For over the past 5 weeks including today, Room 7 had gymnastics with coach Ethan. Gymnastics helped us to improve on our skills and helped many students be more confident when doing a specific activity. Today was our last day of gymnastics, we firstly warmed up by running around the hall 10 times then went straight off to begin our lesson. We all lined up in front of a mat and challenged for the silver and gold medal. The first activity high jump, we had to run up and jump our highest ending in the landing position and Ethan wrote down our score. We then did other challenging activities and ended it off with trying to jump the furthest. After, he tallied our scores then handed us the medal bracelet.
I really enjoyed having gymnastics with coach Ethan because I learnt many new things and it helped me to improve on my confidence.

Science Intensive - Room 9

Today for Science Intensive room 7 and I did stage makeup painting with Miss Smith. We learnt what makeup artists use to do stage makeup, we watched a short video of a makeup artist painting a lion on her face and once she was done it looked very realistic. We sketched out an original photo from the internet or of or own then went to the art room and started painting. Once we were done painting we left it to dry. After morning tea we went back to the art room and went over it with another layer then finished it off.
I really enjoyed Science Intensive with Miss Smith because I learned a lot and it could be very useful in the future.

Figure It Out - Size Wise

Today we did a Figure It out book. The most challenging question was Problem Three where we had to figure out how long it would take Franke to catch the bus to and from school. Problem: Frank either walks to school and catches the bus home or catches the bus to and walks home. Both ways, it takes him 1 1/2 hour to travel to and from school. If he were to walk to and from school, how long would it take him?

Astronaut Letter

Dear family...

I am writing this letter to tell you about my experience here in space, well i'll try tell you everything because I don't know how much time I actually have. Anyway, I am working with NASA for the programme. I'm just reminding you that your child has taken a very risky mission and the i'm so sorry I never told you what Project Mercury is. The goal of the early Highlight of the space race is to put a man into Earth Orbit and return whomever it is back home safely.

I have experienced many new things I've never experienced before. It's weird having to go to the bathroom in a very odd way and using a seatbelt while doing your business is awkward. Having to wash my hair with floating water just fantasies me but not being able to wash it properly just makes me feel disgusted.

We astronauts had to make six flights during Project Mercury. Two flights went to space and came right back down while the other four of them went into orbit and circled Earth. I was one of the lucky astronauts who got the opportunity to go into space. I was anxious at first when we took off because you never know what would happen. I wish I could continue writing and telling you about my whole experience here in space but his is all the time I have.

Toitoi - Reading with PWC

Today room 7 had the opportunity to read with PWC.

We were reading the Toitoi books and we had to find our favourite piece of writing in the book. We were working with Katana from PWC, once we found a story we were satisfied of, we had to share it with the group and everyone got to read a piece in the story. I really enjoyed the story "A Life with Type 1 Diabetes". It really satisfied me and it was a really sad story about a young girl who had type 1 diabetes, when she told her mother she didn't believe her until they went to the hospital and she did an injection test and the result was positive. Much thanks to PWC for taking their time out to share their book with us as well as reading with us.

Inquiry - Diagram about Hearing Loss

For Inquiry my group and I created a diagram/poster about Hearing Loss. In the poster there is information about the questions we were curious about and there is also pictures that are related to our questions. Down below is our diagram, I hope you learn something new about hearing loss and enjoy!

Explanation - I heard a whisper

I heard a whisper

On a rainy day a group of students stayed at the library to study for a huge exam coming up. Santo, Johnny, Stefan, and Caroline. They were all sitting at one table in front of the vending machines because the back tables were being used by other students.

As they were trying their best to concentrate and remain focused so they could study, Stefan finds it hard to focus because of the amount of depression and stress he has been going through. He took a break from studying and walked around the library until he felt better. Once he felt like he could concentrate, he went back and continued to study.

The sun had finally set and it was really getting late. Everyone had left. The library was very silent and it looked as though the room was pitch black, they could barely see half of the room. Throughout their studying Johnny brought up terrifying stories that had been placed in this library, but they didn’t believe him because they knew that the stories weren’t true. All three of them tried to ignore Johnny but he wouldn’t stop. While he was telling his creepy stories they heard a whisper coming from upstairs and they froze with fear. The very focused group of students were horrified. They were so terrified of what it was, so they quickly packed their study books and rushed to the door.

As they were trying to leave they heard the whisper again. The doors slam shut and automatically locks on it’s own. There is not a single window you can open. The lights turn off and their hearts are beating non-stop, they then try and make their way towards the door so they could try and bust it down or maybe scream for help. Caroline then finds a very old fancy looking torch in a small box underneath a cabinet full of books. She hits the switch on the torch and points it at everyone. Their eyes squinted because their eyes were tired. She flashed it upstairs and they saw the most terrifying thing they have ever seen, a mysterious woman sitting on a rocking chair staring at them.

They screamed as loud as they could and cried for help. They then saw a car pull up in the parking lot, so they tried to bang on the door to get the their attention but it didn’t work. So we flashed the torch at him and he rushed to us then called the owner of the library. The woman suddenly runs rapidly at them with a knife. The students scared for their lives, they decide to fight back. Just as Johnny was about to take the first hit, the police opens the door and the woman disappears. The students walk out looking paralysed but very relieved.

A few days after the incident happened they couldn’t stop thinking about what happened, they found out the previous owner of the library was a woman called Roary Higgins who had died in the library. They say she haunts the library and will haunt anyone who tries to demolish it.

Writing - The Concert

The concert

The sun sets and it’s getting late. Jackson and Ivan headed for the showers while Mark and Twan were picking out their clothes. Jackson had a bad feeling in his gut like something was going to happen, but he pushed his worries aside and tried to enjoy the night.

Mark had already gotten changed. He was wearing the usual clothes he wears when going out, a black long sleeve t-shirt with camo chino joggers and black sneakers which he thought was flash. Jackson and Twan were basically wearing the same thing, blue jeans with a white long sleeve t-shirt and white sneakers, while Ivan was just wearing casual clothes, a blue hoodie with black chino joggers and blue vans with his hair slick back. Once they’ve all finished doing their hair and spraying Lynx on it was time to leave. They make sure the house is locked up and they’ve got the tickets, after that headed off to Post Malone’s concert.

During the car ride they listen to old school music like backstreet boys and boyz II men, “Could you turn the radio up please!” Ivan says as he still has the worrying feeling. As they reach their destination they see a helicopter rounding the building, they thought it was the police so they didn’t worry about it. They rush in line so they could get the front row which is the best because you get a perfect view of Post Malone. As they take the first step into the building they got that Post Malone vibe, they were so lucky they got the front row and they thought of Post Malone meeting them. Post Malone walks out and everyone’s jumping and screaming. They jam to a couple of his songs and when he sings Rockstar everyone jumps up and down feeling like a real rockstar.

Post Malone plays a few other songs and just when he sings his last song “I fall apart” everyone got that sad kind of vibe. “Where’s Jackson” asked Ivan “He went to the bathroom” replied Mark. “What, this is the last song he should be out here living the moment” says Ivan with emotion. “Don’t worry, I’m recording it for him” said Mark “Ok, good” said Ivan. They continue to sway their hands in the air and just right when the song is about to finish they hear people screaming from the back, “Help” cries a young woman. They see bombings coming in from a helicopter and everybody tries to run to the exit doors. It’s painful seeing people get hurt, so they tried to help as many people as we could to the exit. They saw one woman falling off the edge of the side so Mark rushes to help her while Ivan and Twan go off looking for Jackson.

It’s past 30 minutes and the police has arrived. The bombing stopped but people are still terrified for their life. Mark rushes to the other boys to help find Jackson. A few minutes have past and they find Jackson helping a young teenage boy trying to find his sister. They all look away for one second and the teenage boy has already ran off. They turn to their right side and they see him in tears hugging his sister. Everyone then reaches an exit point and there are more than 12 ambulances here. The wounded people are helped into the ambulance waiting to head off to the hospital, and as one left another 3 came back.

They then help some people find their relatives and they helpfully offered to take one family home. After they took that family home they went back to the incident and see only one family there. “Do you need a ride home” said Ivan to a crying woman with her brother. “That would be very helpful” says the crying woman with fear. They take her to her residence and she hugs Ivan with a huge thank you and smile on her face. They then head off home themselves. “You know the weird thing was, I had a strange feeling in my gut that something would happen” says Ivan. “Then why didn’t you tell us” asks Twan. “Because I didn’t want to ruin the night” replies Ivan with fear still from the incident.

Around the World reading - Poetry (2)

Around the world reading
Tittle: Two girls ago

My rating: 7/10

Author: Lucie Brock-Broido

Summary:
The poem itself is very simple and easy. I think i'ts trying to tell us a teenage girl's/boy's life with their parents in it telling her/him to follow rules they have given her/him. I think the parents are very protective of the teenager, but it also says " No threat, In the table of contents i'm not dead yet ". I think the parents are trying to tell her/him they haven't died yet, they still control and tell you what to and not to do.

Can you hear that? - Diagram

For the past 2 weeks we have been reading a book called Can you hear that. Today for reading I created a diagram showing sound waves and air particles. In my diagram i included information of what air particles and sound waves are. Down below is my diagram

Can you hear that - Summary

For the past 2 weeks we have been reading the book Can you hear that. It is a book about sound, how sound is produced, and how animals hear sound differently from us humans. Down below i have written a summary about how animals hear sound.

My Summary:
Animals hear sound differently from humans. In this text i learnt snakes send low-frequency sound vibrations through their bones to their inner ear and crickets have eardrums on their knees. I also read dog’s have a much higher hearing range from humans, there eardrums are thinner than ours and are vibrated by smaller high-frequency sound waves. The smaller the animal the higher their hearing range is.

Around the World reading - Poetry (1)

Around the World reading
Tittle: Be More Like Sputnik Monroe

My rating: 8/10

Author: W. Todd Kaneko

Summary:
The poem itself i think is trying to say be more like your role model. It's about a man's father who passed away and left him a trove of video tapes. The video tapes were of Sputnik Monroe and his mother, who had left them for parts unknown. The tapes were his parents life story of wrestling and bad crimes. His mother once pulled up a fight in a truck stop and stabbed a man with her middle finger, then moved away and left it for her husband to fight him.

Facts: Sputnik Monroe is a famous american wrestler who had passed away in 2006. He was a headliner in many territories, and was best known in Memphis, Tennessee.

Swimming Reflection

For the last 5 to 6 weeks we have had swimming lessons. I've enjoyed it so far but i think i haven't improved on backstroke and freestyle ever since I've got into the pool. All i need to work on is listening to the teacher when she is giving out instructions and also backstroke and freestyle. The first thing i need to work on is freestyle. I swim to deep under the water and i need to stay up so i don't have to stop multiple times to breathe. The next thing i need to work on is my backstroke. I stop too many time when the water goes over my face and i don't put my arms in the right position either. Over the past few weeks of swimming i think everyone has been doing great and no one has had a serious emergency.

Volleyball Relfection

Volleyball is a very amusing sport and I am grateful that Glenbrae got the opportunity to have it every Thursday. For the past few weeks we have been learning to play volleyball. I've learnt new skills and different positions. I've learnt resting, setting, serving, spiking, and digging position. The activities and games we play are very fun and it gets us energised for the day. I really enjoyed last weeks game when were split into two teams and everyone was on the court, if you got the ball out or if the ball was grounded in your area then you would be out yourself and the last one standing wins.

Active learners

During the last 2 days, we have been learning about what an active learner is. We have learnt a lot about being an active learner. If you want to be an active learner, you need to be wise and thoughtful during classes and be respectful towards other people.

SLJ week 4, day 5

SLJ, Winter Learning Journey
Day 5: Looking into the Future
Activity 1: Your Future Self

It may be hard to imagine, but one day you will graduate from high school and it will be time to decide what to do next. You may want to study at university, become an apprentice, go to training college, travel, or start working. There are so many options!

Take a minute to think about your future. What would you like to do when you finish school? Would you like to work in a specific job? Would you like to study at university? What would you study? Maybe you’d even like to move overseas. Share your thoughts and ideas on your blog site. There are no wrong answers!

When i graduate High School i would love to go to University and study on Engineering. My dream job is to become and Engineer, i would love to work, study and fix cars.

Activity 2: Flying Cars

Let’s imagine that you’ve just learned to drive, and your family has decided to buy you a brand new car. You are allowed to choose from any of the following designs:

Red-Cadillac-750x443.jpg

hummer.png

flying car (2).jpg

On your blog please tell us which of the three cars you would choose and why.

I would pick the second vehicle because it's a lot bigger and it's more stronger than the other cars. When i drive i would love to take my family to many different place's and the car i chose has more seats than the other cars.

Bonus Activity: Blade Runner 2049

There is a new movie out in cinemas at the moment called Blade Runner 2049.

It is a movie about what the world will be like in the future. Imagine that you able to travel through time and that you can see what the world will look like in 2099.

On your blog write a description of what New Zealand will be like at that time (80 – 90 years from now). What kind of houses will people live in? What will they eat? Where will they work?

80 - 90 years from now, people would probably live in metal houses and their would be mansions on every street. The people would eat new invented foods and probably some old 2017 foods as well. People would probably be inventing robots as their job, people will get paid to make robots and sell them. People would buy the robots to do what ever they want them to

SLJ, week 4, day 4

SLJ, Winter Learning Journey
Day 4: Contemporary Entertainment
Activity 1: Moana

In late 2016, the movie Moana was released by Disney. It’s a beautiful story about a young Polynesian girl from the fictional island of Motunui, who goes on a big adventure.

moana.jpg

Watch the trailer for Moana and then write a summary of the movie on your blog. If you’ve seen the movie, you can include your favourite part! Tell us as much as you can about the movie. What is it about? Who are the main characters in the movie? What do they do in the movie? Where do they go?

Main Characters: Moana/Maui

What is it about? Moana is a movie about a girl who has a big heart. She travels the seas with Maui to help save her people on her island and takes risky missions. She finds the heart of Tefeti and needs Maui to restore Tefiti can go back as a good women. Once they restore the heart the island becomes bright, Moana's family and people is saved and Maui gets a brand new hook from Tefiti

My favourite part of the movie is at the end when they restore the heart of Tefiti and Moana's family and people are safe and happy. My favourite song in the movie is also How Far I'll Go

Activity 2: Country Calendar

Did you know that the longest running television show in New Zealand history is a programme called ‘Country Calendar’? It started on 6 March 1966 and has been running ever since. The programme includes stories of everyday New Zealanders, many of whom are farmers.

farmer.jpg

Watch this short clip from Country Calendar. What do you think would be the most interesting and/or challenging things about being a farmer? Would you would like to be a farmer when you are older. Why/why not? Give us, at least, two reasons to support your answer.

When i'm older i would love to experience what it's like to be a farmer. I'd love to do all the gardening in the farm and plant new plants. I'd also love to ride and feed the animals, i've always wanted to feed animals and take care of one, i'd also always wanted to ride one and teach them new tricks. But then also farmers are hard work's and they would have to do a lot of challenging things on the farm.
Challenging Things:
Planting crops, shaving sheep, gathering livestock, and harvesting crops.

Activity 3: Singing a Different Tune

A number of New Zealand (NZ) singers and songwriters have recently burst onto the music scene, becoming popular both in NZ and overseas. One of these artists, Lorde, is gaining a lot of recognition for her unique style and songwriting ability. People all over the world seem to really like the lyrics (words) that she writes in her songs.

Think of your favourite song. Share the name of the song, the name of the person who wrote the song and the lyrics from the song on your blog. You must type the lyrics not cut and paste them in order to earn full points for the activity.

Title: Ehu Girl
Artist: Kolohe Kai
Lyrics:

Said it happened last night about ten to eleven

when i first laid eyes on you,
Standing in line, into Club Triple Seven
It was just like heaven and a dream come true,
We're standing in the right place at the right time,
When you, this Ehu Girl, caused the crime.

You're my pretty little Ehu Girl who made me a fool in love,

You got my heart all in a whirl and now it needs cooling off,
You set my heart on fire and now i don't know what to do,
You set my heart on fire and now i'm so in love with you, my Ehu Girl

Said i'm feeling it now, something I've never felt,

My hearts so hot i think i'm gonna melt,
Somehow, I want to see you again
My love, sent from above.
And beautiful girls yes I've seen a few,
but out of all the beauty in the world there's no one quite like you

You're my pretty little Ehu Girl who made me a fool in love,
You got my heart all in a whirl and now it needs cooling off,
You set my heart on fire and now i don't know what to do,
You set my heart on fire and now i'm so in love with you,

My Ehu Girl

The way your Ehu hair flows in the air,
The way your shinning eyes reflect the sky,
The way your smile burns up my flame,
But i don't know your name and i guess i'll call you my

Pretty little Ehu Girl who made me a fool in love,
You got my heart all in a whirl and now it needs cooling off,
You set my heart on fire and now i don't know what to do,
You set my heart on fire and now i'm so in love with you

Day 3: Social Systems

Activity 1: Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP)

In 1996, New Zealand adopted the MMP voting system. In September of 2017 we had a national election. Everyone in New Zealand, over the age of 18, was invited to vote for who they wanted to form the next government in New Zealand. The race was really close and in the end, three different political parties (Labour, New Zealand First and the Green Party), came together to form the new government. It is called a ‘coalition government’ because it includes different people from different political parties.

Imagine that you had to form a coalition government with two other people. Who would you choose to partner with?

I would form a coalition with my son, Aronui, and with my friend, Amber. Aronui would be a great addition to the coalition because he is funny and kind. He would make us laugh and take care of us. Amber would be great because she is really smart and thoughtful. She is also good at making decisions. I think that we would form a great team. What about you? Who would you choose? Why?

I would form a coalition with my sister Mele and my friend Anita. Anita is funny and kind. She would make us all laugh, keep us on track and she would keep us safe. Mele is smart and thoughtful. She would get everything done quickly and she would make good decisions.

Activity 2: Migration

Over the past few decades, there has been a huge rise in the number of people coming to New Zealand to live and/or travel. I was one of those people! In fact, I moved with my family to New Zealand in 2010 and I am so glad that I did. It’s a pretty amazing place to call home! At the moment I live about 10 minutes from three stunning beaches and a beautiful national park.

Speaking of home, where do you live? On your blog, please post a picture of your hometown and provide a list of three things that tourists, like us, could do if we came to visit. What do you like most about your hometown? (Remember the guidelines for being Cybersmart, and never post your address online).

Hometown G.I, Auckland

1. I live 10 minutes away from G.I where there is a huge stadium called Te Oro. Te Oro is a place where many teenagers/children go learn to dance, there is also a few other subjects such as art. Tourists go and look around, they go watch some amazing cultural performances or amazing paintings

2. In G.I there is also some amazing Graffiti. Near the laundromat there is a huge graffiti saying Glen Innes, it's also so amazing because it represents Glen Innes. There it Graffiti near the shops with different objects and colours

3. Near Pt England school there is a Pt England Reserve. People can go there and take beautiful photo's of the ocean or your family. People also go there with there family and have a bbq, they also play a few sports games such as cricket

Activity 3: Modern Learning Environments

Over the past few years, a number of schools have changed the way that they teach. Instead of one teacher working in one classroom with one group of students, some schools have built huge classrooms where many teachers work together to teach a big group of students. This is called a ‘Modern Learning Environment’ (MLE).

Some people prefer Modern Learning Environments while others aren’t so sure. Take a look at the pictures above. The one on the left is a photograph of a traditional classroom, and the picture on the right is of a Modern Learning Environment.

Imagine that you are a teacher, and design your own classroom. What would it look like? What furniture would you have? I would love to have some beanbags for reading on.

Draw a floorplan of your classroom (either in Google Draw or on paper) and upload it to your blog. Describe what is special about your classroom and why you designed it this way.

I’ve drawn a classroom with pink carpet and bright coloured tables. I also included a kitchen so that we can do cooking every day and a HUGE bookshelf because I love to read! What would you like to see in your classroom?
